Monkey Wrench

Last time with Helene Troy: http://lancemyblogcanbeatupyourblog.wordpress.com/2012/06/13/ride/

Helene leaned against a lightpole typing on her new phone’s keyboard as Sadie bought sandwiches from a street cart. She put in numbers she could remember like family, Sadie, landlord, bar job at Mickey’s, Jackson and Mara. Helene paused and wondered if having a new phone would be an excuse to lose contact with troublesome relationships like Case and Darcy.

“Don’t worry Leney, I’ve got Ramona Gallery and her producer’s numbers. She gave them to me last night after you trashed your phone.”

Helene still hadn’t pieced together her sinful evening, Helene slumped against the pole and dropped her head.

“Sadie, Ramona saw everything I did last before you and Mara got me back home?”

Sadie slurped lemonade through a straw and handed Helene her lunch.

“Leney, I have no idea what your deal with Ramona is. I know it’s more than you’ll ever tell me. But, if I got crazy drunk and around my hero, Dave Grohl, no matter how hot I looked, he wouldn’t stick around to make sure I was alright. We had to talk her out of coming with us. Mara was convinced you’d kill us if that happened.”

Helene’s corrected posture and head nod stopped Sadie. Sadie and Mara had done the right thing. She would have been furious if Ramona Gallery saw her roach-infested place. She felt a small triumph in not running off Ramona because of a drunken night.

Helene and Sadie walked a half a block to a bench. They sat their sandwiches between them and Sadie reached into her turquoise satchel and took out her phone.

“Leney, you and I know almost all of the same people. Why don’t you get the numbers you need out of my phone and I’ll get us a cab. We have a few hours to kill before we meet with Ramona to work on her songs.”

As Sadie wiped beads of sweat from her light orange eyebrows, Helene’s phone vibrated. She recognized the number. It was Ramona Gallery.

****blogger’s note****

This is a new story episode of The Ballad of Helene Troy. You can find the rest of the story, so far, here: http://lancemyblogcanbeatupyourblog.wordpress.com/the-ballad-of-helene-troy/  This is also a repsonse to Trifecta Writing challenge of  the word “triumph” http://www.trifectawritingchallenge.com/

Today’s song is a nod to Sadie’s one and only idol, Dave Grohl and his band Foo Fighters. The song has a few meanings here. Here’s Monkey Wrench. Play it very loud.

  1. Well, there’s one she won’t need to reprogram. This relationship is going to be absolutely fascinating as it develops. Clearly, it’s going to form a major turning point for her, since so far, all of her experiences have been sort of jumping blocks to something (What? only you know). One note: Mara was convinced you’ll — should be ‘you’d’

  2. Oh Ramona will be like the “sand”..just when Leney thinks she has erased the memories of her, or at least put her on the back burner…there she is, at the bottom of your bag or in this case, on your caller ID. Love is hard to shake.

Which is why it’s so good for you. Plus I’m really hoping Ramona is capable of forgiving Leney her lovesick antics, the last thing Leney needs right now is a lecture about what she did..she knows.

    I liked this….a lot!

    • problem is they need to each other, profesionally. Ramona needs Helene for relevance and possible songwriting, and Helene needs her for money, exposure, and record company contacts.

  3. I just don’t know what to think about Ramona. I’m ready to give her the benefit of the doubt, and not think she’s out to ruin Helene. Or not… she’s an enigma.
